Are we ready for Desktop Videoconferencing?

As bandwidth groups and computer processors become faster we have seen videoconferencing make its way to desktop providing administrators and teachers that opportunity to use IVC in new ways. Do you think Desktop IVC will take off or is this a fad that will be short lived?

Please share your thoughts. Why will this technology not take off or How can you see desktop IVC be used in our schools.

Video on Demand – Coming to a PC near you

During our presentation on Video On Demand we took a look at live streams, webcasts and subscription video content to your desktop. Now that our schools have the bandwidth to support browser based video our teachers have access to a wide range of video content that they can use to enhance their lessons. We looked at live programming from Viewstream, webcasts from the United Nations, Podcasts via iTunes and Subscription programming from Discovery and Safari. Did any of these standout at your favorites or show potential to use you your school?

In our program on wiki’s online collaboration made easy we took a closer look at Wikispaces, PB Works and Google Sites. We discussed the setting, shared how to edit pages and embedding content into your pages. Our question for this week is how can you use a wiki in your classroom?

How social are you???

Social Networks are not new nor do they appear to be going away in the next year or two but do they have a role in K-12 education? During our session today we share some of the different strategies Social Networks have used to bring people together online. For some this makes the world much smaller and provides students and adults the ability to share common interests beyond your geographic and economic norms. For others this is a dangerous area for kids and teachers privacy or safety.

How do you feel about Social Networks and their role in K-12 education?

Welcome back and happy new year!

One quick point of clarification on a mixup which is my fault. You may have noticed a slide in your hands rfering to the Ashland class roster. That is from last years class. When I was updating this presentation I forgot to delete that slide… Sorry for any confusion that the slide may have caused.

Podcasting is a fun enhancement to anyone’s curriculum. Whether you are looking for materials, creating educational resources or just sharing news and updates with your students/parents/community you will find some great resources available for free. Our discussion question for this session is how can you see podcasting as a tool to enhance student learning? Is it a fad or a glimpse at the future?

Tell me a story digitally

Who ever thought that there are so many ways to create digital stories and most of the options are free! During our session we looked at Xtranomal, Animoto, shwup, Photostory 3, Kerpoof, Myths & Legends and voice thread. Each had their own little way to enhance photos, video and stories.

After seeing all of these strategies did one stand out from the rest? Which if any will you look to add to your curriculum and how can it enhance student learning.

I hope everyone enjoyed our session on Personal Learning networks. With all of the different mediums that educators are using to share their knowledge base it can be overwhelming. During our session we demonstrated podcasting, blogging, twitter, Google Reader, Pageflakes, webinars, presentation sharing, social networks and social bookmarking. It’s enough to make your head spin.

The key is to start small and build your learning network slowly. Find the one strategy that makes the most sense to you and let it grow. Did one of our strategies stick out to you? Which if any will you use to increase your professional development?
