Video on Demand – Coming to a PC near you

During our presentation on Video On Demand we took a look at live streams, webcasts and subscription video content to your desktop. Now that our schools have the bandwidth to support browser based video our teachers have access to a wide range of video content that they can use to enhance their lessons. We looked at live programming from Viewstream, webcasts from the United Nations, Podcasts via iTunes and Subscription programming from Discovery and Safari. Did any of these standout at your favorites or show potential to use you your school?

Please share your thoughts on digital video with the group.

  1. I love video on demand! It gives me access to experts a variety of fields. Although I liked using Discovery my elementary students, Safari is an “okay” second choice. Discovery had better video clips and images for me use in the elementary classroom. Safari is not as user friendly and many of the video clips are better suited for older children. I look forward to exploring other resources mentioned in our class.

  2. I am new to VOD, but when I get some “spare time”, I will experiment with it. It certainly sounds like a good resource for exposing students to the experts in any field.

  3. Video on demand is great for the classroom teacher who has the technological capabilities to use it properly. I use it quite often with Safari montage and since I teach high school juniors and seniors these videos are right up my alley. I also get the CNN student news that comes to my computer but the idea of being able to subscribe to podcasts through iTunes is extremely tempting. The idea of video on demand allows for teachers to enhance their classroom textbooks and lectures with actual videos that help to clarify ideas and topics. I am a big fan of VOD.

  4. I really enjoy Safari. I can find a movie on almost anything at the last minute. I like showing the videos on my SmartBoard and doing the quizzes. However, some topics have a ton of things on Safari, and others have zilch. I’ve looked for topics before and come up with nothing. I was grateful for all the stuff they had on Jane Austen.

  5. We currently subscribe to DE Streaming. Because of budget cuts and the expense, I have cancelled our subscription for hte 2010-2011 school year. We are instead subscribing to Learn360. Teachers often use YouTube and Teacher Tube for video streaming in the classroom.
