Technology Toolbox

PD is only an IP away

All of the cool people are in my PLN…. want to join?

I hope everyone enjoyed our session on Personal Learning networks. With all of the different mediums that educators are using to share their knowledge base it can be overwhelming. During our session we demonstrated podcasting, blogging, twitter, Google Reader, Pageflakes, webinars, presentation sharing, social networks and social bookmarking. It’s enough to make your head spin.

The key is to start small and build your learning network slowly. Find the one strategy that makes the most sense to you and let it grow. Did one of our strategies stick out to you? Which if any will you use to increase your professional development?

  1. After watching the PLN session, I know that I need to start small – as you suggested. Even though I’m not ready to start my own blog, I can see that gathering information from other blogs is a great way to start. The podcasts you mentioned also sound like good resources for gathering information on a particular topic. I’m going to start with EPN to see what’s there.

  2. I like the Pageflakes aspect of this session. It seems like a nice tool for organization and also allows me to connect RSS feeds from multiple sources to my one location. I would like to utilize Pageflakes on my homepage for the district. Everything would be only a click away for my students and their parents.

    • That sounds cool, Todd. I wish I was that ready to use this technology. I need to get up to speed:)

  3. Having attended the two seminars earlier this fall, I feel very comfortable with most of what was discussed in the PLN session. I have started a blog of my own, using blogger in the google apps. There are so many things you can do with PLN, it almost feels endless. How does one find the time to use all of these things?

  4. I never even heard the term PLN before this session on it, but I still got a lot out of the session. I’m really hoping to have access to ning and start using it for professional networking. I also LOVED the social bookmarking and will use that next semester in the elective class I will be teaching (Using the Computer as a Writing Tool). I’ve also joined Classroom 2.0. I’m a bit of a facebook junky and love the idea of ‘facebook for teachers’. I want to include that next semester also.

  5. I need to learn more about face book twitter etc. My children are on face book all the time. Pageflakes is awesome. Just a brief viewing of 2 sites and I have tons of ideas.

  6. I think webinars would be something I would like to use for professional development. I just signed up to facebook and I am learning to navigate there. I am excited to connect to people I haven’t seen in a while.

  7. I may begin blogging with my reading students next year. I am hoping to explore this idea more over the summer months. I have several students (2nd graders0 e-mailing me on a regular basis. It may be interesting to pose questions for students to answer in a Blog form, especially in reading. Now that we have a computer lab at school, students would be able to blog at school if they did not have a computer in the classroom.

  8. I joined the Classroom 2.0 Ning. I’m amazed by how many free resources are available. I’m constantly being sent announcement for free webinars. I have encouraged all of the library/technology specialists in my district to join, also. In a time when PD monies are low, it is awesome that we can all teach each other!
